Can I cross borders between countries with the rented car? What do I need to know?

Are you planning a trip that will involve crossing borders? Learn what you need to do to proceed smoothly

Updated today

Crossing borders with a rental car is possible, but it is only allowed when the rental company authorizes it and records this permission in the contract. Without formal authorization, the crossing may violate the rental terms, void coverage, and result in costs and penalties.

If your trip includes another country (or returning the car in another country), the safest approach is to: confirm the rental company’s policy, request authorization in advance, and ensure you have the required insurance/documentation for the destination.

Important: authorization to cross borders depends exclusively on the rental company. Rentcars can guide the process but does not guarantee permission; final confirmation always comes from the rental company.

What are the general conditions for border crossing to be allowed?

  1. Do I need prior authorization from the rental company?

Yes. Prior authorization from the rental company is the most important rule for crossing borders with a rental car. This authorization is not automatic when making the reservation: it must be requested and recorded in the contract.

As soon as the reservation is confirmed, contact the rental company and provide:

  • country(ies) you plan to visit

  • approximate dates

  • basic travel itinerary

  • whether the car will be returned in another country (one-way)

Some rental companies require this request to be made days or even weeks in advance, as it may be necessary to issue specific documents, adjust coverage/insurance, or approve the route.

Without authorization recorded in the contract:

  • the contract may be considered violated

  • coverage/insurance may be voided

  • the renter may be responsible for 100% of the costs in case of accident, damage, or theft

  • the rental company may apply contractual penalties (including remote vehicle immobilization and fines).

2. What fees may apply for cross-border travel?

Cross-border fees vary depending on the rental company, country, and type of rental. It is common for extra charges to apply when the rental company authorizes leaving the country of origin.

The most common fees include:

  • Cross-border fee: an extra charge (per day or fixed) to cover administrative costs and the extension of insurance coverage.

  • One-way fee: applied if you pick up the car in one country and return it in another. It is usually much higher than the cross-border fee.

  • Fines and penalties: applied in case of contract violation (e.g., undeclared crossing).

3. What documents are usually required?

Required documents may vary depending on the country and rental company, but typically include:

  • Valid physical driver’s license.

  • Valid passport (same nationality as the driver’s license).

  • Credit card in the name of the main driver.

  • In some destinations, an International Driving Permit (IDP).

  • Specific insurance required by the region (see below).

Check all requirements and documents for international travel.

How far in advance should I request authorization from the rental company?

  • Some rental companies require the cross-border request to be made up to 30 days in advance to issue the necessary documents.

  • Always check this deadline at the time of booking.

  • The more countries included in your itinerary, the earlier you should request it, as additional documents and insurance may be required.

Are there vehicle restrictions for crossing borders?

Yes. Cross-border restrictions may vary by vehicle category. It is common for some categories to be harder to approve, such as:

  • luxury, high-performance, and/or exotic cars

  • large vans

  • cargo vehicles or special categories

Even with stricter restrictions for these types of vehicles, the same rule applies: crossing is only allowed with authorization recorded in the contract.

How do border-crossing policies vary across different regions of the world?

South America (Mercosur)

The Green Card is a mandatory insurance required to travel between Mercosur countries (e.g., Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay) when the vehicle leaves the country where the rental originated.

Important points:

  • The Green Card does not replace the rental company’s authorization. You need both: authorization in the contract + Green Card

  • Not all rental companies issue the Green Card. In some cases, it must be obtained through regional providers (according to the rental company’s guidance or local requirements)

North America

  • USA – Canada: allowed by most rental companies, but the Canadian Non-Resident Insurance Card is required (insurance card provided at the counter).

  • USA – Mexico: almost all rental companies prohibit it. When allowed, it requires Mexican liability insurance and mandatory return in the USA.

Europe

In Europe, rental companies commonly use a “zone-based” system and impose restrictions depending on the destination country, vehicle category, and insurance coverage.

Zone breakdown:
Zone 1 (e.g., France, Austria, Switzerland): generally allowed
Zone 2 (e.g., Croatia, Poland): restrictions for luxury vehicles
Zone 3 (e.g., some countries outside the European Union and the Balkans): generally not allowed. We recommend checking the specific rental company rules before planning your trip.

Extra attention to:

  • ferry crossings/islands, which may be prohibited

  • international one-way rentals, which may involve high fees

What should I do if I want to book but I don’t know whether the rental company allows cross-border travel?

If you’re not yet sure whether the rental company allows cross-border travel, our customer service team can help guide you.

When the reservation is issued directly by one of our agents, the payment link may remain active for up to 48 hours, depending on the pickup date and the specific conditions of the reservation.

This period, when available, allows you time to:

  • contact the rental company;

  • confirm whether cross-border travel is allowed;

  • check the mandatory documents;

  • confirm additional fees, insurance, and any restrictions.

  • This way, you can validate all the information before completing the payment.

If the pickup date is very close, the payment window may be shorter or even unavailable.

If you need assistance or have any questions during the process, our help center is available to support you.

Remember

  • Never cross a border without authorization; it voids the insurance and may result in fines, remote vehicle blocking, and full charges for damage or theft.

  • All policies vary by rental company, vehicle category, and origin/destination country. Always review the Terms and Conditions of the chosen rental company.
