What happens if I don’t show up to pick up the car? What is a no-show?

In this article, find out what you need to know about no-show, when it happens and what the main guidelines are for these cases

Updated over 4 months ago

No-show is a reservation status that occurs when the reservation holder does not show up at the scheduled time for the rental or exceeds the maximum grace period. In these cases, the rental company can cancel the reservation. A no-show can result in a retention of 20% of the total reservation value or even the retention of the full rental value.

The rules vary according to the policy of each partner rental company, so be sure to inform yourself about this before picking up your vehicle.

What constitutes a no-show?

Pay attention to the situation that falls under the no-show policy:

Absence of the reservation holder to pick up the vehicle at the time marked in the reservation or within the 29-minute grace period, respecting the opening hours of the stores.

My reservation was canceled for no-show, now what?

If your reservation was considered a no-show, it means that the vehicle was not picked up at the time marked in the reservation or within the rental company's grace period, and the reservation ended up being canceled.

What you can do:

  1. Check the rental company's policy: each company has its own retention rules, which can vary from a partial fee to the full value of the reservation.

  2. Contact the Rentcars call center: report exactly what happened. When the reservation is canceled for no-show, it is necessary to activate communication with the rental company to confirm that the vehicle was not used. This confirmation is essential to analyze whether any partial refund is possible. Getting in touch at the right time can speed up the procedures, and our team will be ready to help!

  3. Make a new reservation: if you still need the car, it will be necessary to reserve again. In this case, the values and availability will be updated according to the current situation.

Important tip: arriving early helps to avoid this type of situation in the future. We are here to make your rental experience as smooth as possible!

How to avoid no-show fees?

If your plans change, and you know in advance that you won't be able to show up on the day of pickup, go to My Reservations and make changes or request the reservation cancellation.

Important:

Be aware of the grace periods of the chosen rental company and the store's operating hours. In scenarios of delays and no-shows, additional charges or fees may be applied, including the retention of 20% of the reservation value or the retention of 100% of the reservation value. For example: Europcar may retain funds for cancellations made less than 48 hours in advance; Avis and Budget retain the total amount in case of a no-show; the Enterprise Group (Alamo, National, and Enterprise) retains 100% for no-shows or cancellations made less than 1 hour in advance; and Sixt applies full retention for no-shows. It is essential to carefully review your voucher to understand these implications.
